While the word lamia literally means large shark in Greek, Aristophanes claimed her name derived from the Greek word for gullet (laimos), referring to her habit of devouring children.
My version of Lamia: Woman that posseses snakes and causes them to grow abnormally large in order to regenerate her youth. Symbiotic in that the snake gets huge and powerful while she can live however long as she can perform this act.
